Supporting Welcome Break’s Infrastructure Improvements on the M1 and M69

Pell Frischmann is pleased to have worked with Welcome Break over the past two years, supporting the delivery of new Motorway Service Areas (MSAs) at Hinckley in Leicestershire and Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Welcome Break is one of the leading motorway service station operators in the UK. Their planned sites are inspired by the character of a traditional British village, creating a unique and memorable customer experience. Our role has included close collaboration with the future asset owner, National Highways, to provide the following changes:

Rotherham – M1 Motorway Junction 33
Essential structural support to existing bridge piers, helping to facilitate the safe development of the proposed site.

Rotherham – Access and Safety Assessments
At Rotherham, Pell Frischmann carried out a series of comprehensive assessments and design activities to support safe and efficient vehicle and pedestrian access to the proposed site. This included bespoke vehicle restraint risk assessments to help protect road users from key hazards, including the adjacent freight railway, live road traffic and significant level differences across the site.

Hinckley – A5 / M69 Junction 1
Full design services for a new signalised road junction on the A5, supporting access to the planned MSA

Hinckley – Technology, Highway and Safety Design
In collaboration with 4way, our sister company, Pell Frischmann is also supporting the implementation of National Roads Telecommunications Services (NRTS), traffic signals and street lighting design for a new junction on the A5, adjacent to M69 Junction 1.

Our work also included geotechnical and drainage investigations, pavement surveys, residual life assessments, vehicle restraint assessments, road signage and Road Safety Audits.

The design was completed in Summer 2026, with construction due to begin later this year.

Adrian Wightman, our Transport Infrastructure Technical Director, said:

Whilst the actual (Hinckley) scheme itself is relatively modest, there are many interdependencies between design specialities which can be challenging at times. Overall, the scheme design is progressing well.

We look forward to building on our relationship with Welcome Break in 2026 and beyond. Our ongoing partnership will enable us to continue providing multi-disciplinary solutions that support the successful delivery of complex infrastructure schemes, bringing a wide range of benefits to local communities and the economy.
