Buildings

As technology and economics change, the best engineering adapts and capitalises on the new opportunities to build better and achieve more. From our modest beginnings in 1926, we have grown to become one of the leading structural engineering consultancies in the world.

Buildings have always been at the centre of engineering; from modern skyscrapers to a home, buildings are diverse and hold a beloved place in our hearts. At the core of our business, we have a proven ability to adapt with the changing aspirations and challenges of developers, owners and occupants. To lift the competitive performance of a building, or to help it find funding in tough markets, we combine commercial acumen, design and technical expertise.

Our Buildings Sector is supported by complementary in-house disciplines including Fire Engineering. The Fire Safety industry has changed dramatically, due to the government’s demands to update regulations due to the Grenfell disaster. Utilising the expertise of our Fire Team at the earliest opportunity for your project ensures occupier safety and compliance with standards.

Our Structural and Geotechnical work can be seen in one of our most revolutionary projects, Centre Point. At 32-storeys, it was the first buildings built on large diameter deep piles. Our innovative approach continues to this day: our Deep Basement Engineering expertise in the Zig Zag building, allowing just a one metre separation between London Underground’s rail infrastructure and the building’s five-storey basement.

Our reputation for excellence is reinforced by our portfolio of projects and clients who recognise and appreciate our innovative, sustainable, cost-effective approach. The array of projects and their challenges may be different, and the solutions through which the end goal is met may vary, however our hands-on, engineering-led approach endures with our clients foremost in our mind; whether it be flexible office space in Zig Zag, a change of use and new lease of life for Centre Point or creating life-saving facilities for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Working closely alongside the Digital Engineering & BIM Team, our Structural Team designed Pell Frischmann’s Embodied Carbon for Structures tool, measuring and comparing the embodied carbon content in your structure. To access the tool for yourself and for more information, visit here.

Our Buildings Sector is led by Jonathan Childs.
