Pell Frischmann Begins Second Phase of Repairs at Olton Reservoir

We’re pleased to share that, following our appointment by the Canal & River Trust, work at Olton Reservoir has now progressed to the second phase of the scheme.

Built in 1798 to supply water to the Grand Union Canal, Olton Reservoir is a canal feeder reservoir in the Olton district of Solihull, eight kilometres southeast of Birmingham city centre. The reservoir is the largest of the few open water areas in Solihull and is home to a significant population of waterfowl. Its surrounding woodland provides an essential habitat for local flora and fauna, contributing significantly to Solihull’s biodiversity.

Over time, the clay core at Olton Reservoir has settled and must be raised to reinstate safe impounding levels. Moreover, following the identification of the movement of the spillway left sidewall in July 2022, an early S10 statutory inspection was called.

Consequently, Pell Frischmann, supported by JBA Consulting as PellJBA, has been appointed to undertake several renovations to the dam and its infrastructure. These include raising the dam crest, repairing the dam masonry wall, carrying out maintenance works, and improving access.

The second phase will see us manage the project from the Concept Stage through to Outline Design and Detailed Construction Design, including site supervision.

Joe Chen, our Environment & Sustainability Technical Director, said:

We are pleased to be working with the reservoir experts at JBA Consulting, integrating our own knowledge of the reservoir and canal infrastructure, to deliver the fantastic Olton Reservoir repair project for the Canal & River Trust, ensuring this historic site continues to support the local area, not only as a canal feeder but also as a vital habitat for biodiversity.
