We are thrilled to announce that the Rotherham Canal Barrier has been shortlisted for the Smeaton Award at this year’s ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards which will take place on 3rd March 2023.

The awards celebrate civil engineering projects across the region in recognition of achievement, excellence and innovation in civil engineering. The awards also review factors such as value and impact on society, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, net zero carbon, health and safety and welfare, quality of design, innovation and best practice, difficulty and response, collaboration and excellence in delivery.

We were appointed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to work as lead consultant on a much-needed flood alleviation scheme to reduce the risk of flooding from the River Don and its tributaries.

We are delighted to have specified and supported the use of ultra-low-carbon concrete during construction of the canal barrier at Forge Island resulting in a 70% reduction in embedded carbon. This is linked with our noble purpose; our ultimate parent, RAG-Stiftung, is a foundation prioritising the long-term environmental and social commitments resulting from the closing of Germany’s hard-coal mining industry. Our mission is to generate sustainable funds for the foundation. Therefore, our work directly contributes to protecting the environment and is reflected through the reduction in carbon on this project.

Pell Frischmann’s Mark Duquemin, Head of Environmental Management and Sustainability said:

“We are very pleased to see the whole team that delivered this iconic structure recognised by shortlisting the project for this year’s ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards”.

Management of flood risk within Rotherham is a fundamental element of the wider regeneration plans for the town. Pell Frischmann is proud to have been part of a scheme that will reduce flooding risk to 400 businesses, hundreds of homes and strategic highway, rail, and tram assets improving lives and businesses for the community of Rotherham.
