RAG-Stiftung Annual Report

The publishing of RAG Stiftung’s 2021 Annual Report allows us to see how we, as a business, have contributed to the long-standing goal of funding environmental protection and provided a positive social impact.

Over 2021, 264.5 million euros were spent on the Stiftung’s perpetual environmental obligations, such as pit water management, polder measures and groundwater purification. An additional 27 million euros supports projects in the areas of education, science, and culture, with this figure planned to rise to 32 million euros next year.

RAG-Stiftung is expanding their investment with the creation of an innovation hub and “future factory” called BRYCK. BRYCK’s mission is to create a space and network for aspiring founders, innovators and investors by encouraging collaboration through start-up programmes, mentoring and events. Their commitment to education is also reflected in the RuhrTalente scholarship programme. which supports students to earn educational qualifications and prepares them with the in-demand skills needed in today’s labour market. Investing in the education of young people, particularly those from disadvantaged families, ensures the continued success of the region.

RAG-Stiftung has also supported cultural projects such as their support to internationally renowned festivals such as Ruhrfestspiele festival in Recklinghausen, the Ruhr Piano Festival and the Ruhr Triennale Festival of Arts.

RAG-Stiftung also promoted a special exhibition by photographer Ergun Çağatay titled ‘Wir sind von hier’ or ‘We are from here’ at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site. The collection focused on the recruitment of Turkish migrant workers at the beginning of the 1960s to work in the German coal mining industry. The exhibition highlighted that these workers helped to rebuild the economy whilst simultaneously culturally enriching society. This spirit of inclusion and integration is at the heart of RAG-Stiftung’s aspirations for the region.
