Rotherham Renaissance Flood Alleviation Scheme – Phase 2A
The Rotherham Renaissance Flood Alleviation Scheme (RRFAS) is a strategic flood alleviation scheme within the River Don corridor. The River Don and its tributaries were instrumental in the industrial progress of Sheffield and Rotherham, and this enhancement will vastly contribute to the enrichment of biodiversity in the area and provide protection against flooding, which affected Rotherham Town Centre in June 2007.
RRFAS Phase 1 completed in 2008. Phase 2A began in May 2019 and construction of the flood defence wall started in April 2022, which focused on improving the existing flood defences and the construction of additional flood walls.

What we did
Pell Frischmann undertook outline and detailed design, provided planning application documentation (including assessing the impact on the environment), produced NEC contract documentation and project managed and supervised the ECI contractor during construction.
RRFAS Phase 2A (RRFAS2A) was divided into three areas:
- Ickles Lock Boathouse to Ickles Lock Railway Bridge: Creation of 122m of new flood defence and raised the existing ground to meet flood defence levels.
- Brinsworth Street: Incorporation of 120m of new flood defences into the highway, including 103m of low enforced walls and 150mm piped highway drainage.
- Ickles Lock Bridge East Wing Wall to Centenary Way Embankment and Walls: Additional 138m of new flood defences, tying together existing bridge wingwall and the existing flood defence embankment.
Outcomes
This project saw the delivery of further resilient flood defences to protect key transport and utility infrastructure, including Rotherham Central Railway station, providing a 1-in-100-year standard of protection.
One year and three months following April 2022, the construction had been finally finalised. The opening of the flood defence was celebrated in July 2023.

Jim McMahon, Minister of State, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government said:
What we’ve got here I think is a really good example of Pell Frischmann and the local authority working together in partnership to get the best and the most for the public return…. The benefit of partnership on working together is that we get the absolute best of that public investment.
ICE Award
The RRFAS project was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for the Centenary Award at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Regional Awards 2024.
