Orkney’s Community Wind Farm
Orkney Islands Council is developing Orkney Community Wind Farms to harness the island’s natural resources while bringing much needed funds into the island’s economy. Once operational, the wind farms will generate significant income and community benefit, empowering communities across Orkney while minimising cuts to essential service. The community wind farm project consists of three developments, Quanterness, Hoy and Faray. Each site features turbines up to 149.9m in height and will generate up to 86.4MW of renewable power.
What we did
ITP Energised appointed Pell Frischmann to design all three sites and manage transport and access aspects of the scheme in the planning application.
Using advanced 3D modelling software, the internal access track for each site was designed and optimised with new crane pads to minimise impacts on sensitive areas within the site.
To further support the planning process, a Transport Assessment was prepared to evaluate the likely impact of construction traffic on the surrounding road network. Additionally, a detailed abnormal load route survey was undertaken.
On Faray, an uninhabited island, Pell Frischmann needed to consider access for construction traffic and abnormal loads and developed indicative quay and slipway designs.
Pell Frischmann also provided specialist transport input into the Environmental Impact Assessments for each site.

Outcomes
Quanterness and Hoy received planning permission in December 2021, while Faray’s planning permission was approved in December 2022.
Pre-commencement investigation works are being conducted, with projects scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027.

“The development of wind energy in Orkney will help develop significant low carbon power generation in Orkney that is community owned. These three projects will help power the islands and the wider mainland with low carbon power for generations to come, with the ownership benefits staying in Orkney..”
