Neart na Gaoith Offshore Wind Farm Operations and Maintenance Centre

Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Farm, located in the outer Forth Estuary, is expected to produce 450 MW of low-carbon energy using a maximum of 54 turbines. The primary aim of the development is to produce renewable electricity for the national grid, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and, as a result, reducing future emissions of atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Once completed, it will supply power to around 375,000 homes across Scotland and offset 400,400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The site was granted consent in 2014 and received approval from the Supreme Court in 2017 after an appeal.

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Centre, part of the planning application, is in the coastal town of Eyemouth, with planning permission sought in 2019. The O&M base will remain operational throughout the 25-year lifespan of the wind farm. This investment is expected to boost the local economy by creating new opportunities and jobs for the Scottish Borders community.

What we did

Pell Frischmann were commissioned by Young Planning and Energy Consenting to prepare a Transport Statement to support a planning application for an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) base for the project at Eyemouth Harbour.

The Eyemouth site is compact and our specialist transport planning team assisted the architects in preparing the layout of the site and its connections to the public road. A detailed Transport Statement was then prepared to inform the planning application for the Eyemouth, submitted in 2020 to Scottish Borders Council. This featured sustainable travel proposals to complement the clean energy role of the development.

Outcomes

The project successfully received consent, with the base opening and becoming fully operational in January 2023.
