Pell Frischmann to Support Thames Water with Upgrade Works in Harpenden
Pell Frischmann is pleased to have been working with Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks to deliver a large scheme of upgrade works to Harpenden Sewage Treatment Works (STW) for Thames Water.
The existing site contains assets that are nearly a century old, along with outdated hydraulic processes that limit its capacity to support future growth in the catchment area and meet updated effluent quality standards.
To address this, Pell Frischmann will implement a new activated sludge plant to replace the existing trickling filters and a new tertiary treatment plant to substitute the current sand filters. Additionally, new sludge thickening and associated infrastructure upgrades will be introduced. The proposed scope of works was assessed during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, allowing us to identify potential risks and opportunities for efficiencies. We are now preparing to move forward into the outline and detailed design stages.
The enhancements to the site will ensure that Harpenden STW has headroom for catchment growth up to the design horizon of 2036. This will include suitable space allocation and provision to allow the expansion works to be implemented without disruption to the operation and performance of the in-service units and equipment, accommodating the increase in flow and load beyond the 2036 design horizon.
Lee Brock, our Water & Utilities Sector Director, said:
Pell Frischmann’s Water team are proud to be delivering the concept, outline and detailed multidisciplinary design services through Kier Construction for Thames Water and the complete refurbishment of the dilapidated and ageing Harpenden STW. Building on our extensive experience from AMP7 delivery for Thames Water, we continue to drive our local and client knowledge forward. We are delighted to be part of this flagship project, one of the biggest in recent years for the team.
Pell Frischmann looks forward to collaborating with Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks to support Thames Water, with the goal of driving innovation, sustainability, and carbon reduction through the Harpenden STW Upgrade scheme in the upcoming years.
