We are excited to announce that Pell Frischmann is a finalist for the IET Excellence and Innovation Awards in the Net Zero and Climate Action category.
At Pell Frischmann, we recognise the urgency of achieving Net Zero to address the severe effects of climate change. We firmly believe that engineering and technology can significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and helping us approach the government’s target of achieving Net Zero by 2050. We aim to achieve our own goal of net zero carbon at Pell Frischmann by 2040.
Our nomination is centred around our concept stage Embodied Carbon for Structures tool, EC4S, for its contribution towards addressing environmental and sustainability challenges in the built environment.
Developed within Pell Frischmann, this online tool measures and compares the embodied carbon of pre-engineered, embedded, substructure and superstructure framing options, while also considering the entire building’s lifecycle. Building structures and their foundations will contribute up to 65% of a building’s overall embodied carbon, so these are key design decisions. With built-in, lean, high-utilisation designs for multiple alternative framing typologies, no engineering expertise is required to use this tool, simply choose the usage and column grid using drop-down menus. This is tailor-made for concept stage appraisals.
Alex Dougan-Gaftea, Associate at Pell Frischmann, said:
EC4S is a progressive tool in the pursuit of sustainable structural design. It enables us, our clients and collaborators to evaluate the embodied carbon impact of different framing typologies leading to informed decision-making in line with our commitment to NetZero.
We look forward to attending the IET Excellence and Innovation Awards ceremony on November 15th at the Glasgow Science Centre with our colleagues and partners.
