We are proud to share that our Associate Ecologist, Dr. Fernando Scherner, has had his latest article titled ‘‘Loss of Seaweed Biodiversity in Marine Tropical Regions Caused by Unplanned Coastal Urbanization’’, published as a chapter in the newly released book ‘‘Ecology of Tropical Cities – Volume I’’ (Springer, 2025).
The book features contributions from researchers across 29 countries and offers a global perspective on the challenges and solutions for conserving urban biodiversity. Scherner’s chapter delves into marine biodiversity and the escalating threats it faces due to unplanned coastal urbanisation worldwide.
Poor coastal planning and pollution are the main contributors to these impacts, with some groups of seaweeds and calcareous algae being particularly affected, which is significant as this group is comprised of keystone species for marine life. On the other hand, ephemeral seaweed species tend to benefit from such impacts, which leads to the domination of such groups. These differences in performance lead to significant changes in marine benthic community structures, often resulting in major losses of biodiversity in the affected areas.
This publication outlines the main causes of the problem and provides a summary of potential mitigation and restoration techniques. These evidence-based mitigation strategies aim to help protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, which are essential for maintaining habitat structure and ecological function.
