Kintore Hydrogen Project Secures Planning Permission

Pell Frischmann is proud to have supported Statera Energy in obtaining planning permission in principle for the Kintore Hydrogen project, which will become the UK’s largest green hydrogen production facility once complete.

The project site is located to the southwest of the town of Kintore in Aberdeenshire, strategically located adjacent to the existing Kintore substation. The substation will provide a strategic connection point for the power source for the project, maximising the value of Scotland’s abundant renewable resources.

Kintore Hydrogen was developed to convert excess renewable energy, which would otherwise be curtailed into hydrogen. The hydrogen can then be transported through a network of pipelines across the country, helping to enable the shift to low-carbon thermal generation as we move away from fossil fuels.

Pell Frischmann’s role on the project was key in securing the consent by carrying out transport and access assessments, focused on successfully demonstrating a viable route for critical Abnormal Indivisible Loads (AIL), including electrical transformers.

To support the development during the planning review process, we produced a comprehensive, statutory Transport Assessment and the Traffic and Transport Chapter of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report. All physical access constraints were identified for the AILs associated with the movement of transformers, as well as general construction traffic, with appropriate mitigation measures proposed.
