Improving Blackpool Town Centre’s Transport Network

Pell Frischmann is pleased to have been working on Blackpool Council’s Town Centre Access Scheme, an initiative set to transform Blackpool town centre’s transport network under the council’s £1 billion regeneration programme for Blackpool. The scheme looks to improve traffic and journey times and implement safer and more accessible spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus users.

As part of our role, we are producing a detailed design for a multi-phase project spanning approximately nine key sites and junctions across Blackpool town centre. The plan involves the alteration of the town’s existing layout to support future development projects across Blackpool. These will also include the provision of parking laybys, segregated cycleways, shared areas, controlled crossings and formalised bus stops. Among the recent developments, there is the recently constructed Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) building, a large Multiversity site and a planned multi-storey car park.

Jake McGhee, our Transport Infrastructure Highways Engineer, said:

The experience of developing Phase 1 of the TCAS project has been great. We have managed to maintain an already strong working relationship with Blackpool Council through our shared goal of improving the connectivity and infrastructure around the town centre.

With the design of Phase 1 near completion, we are excited to begin work on Phase 2, which will involve approximately five more sites, with scopes varying from alteration of highway arrangements to new cycle facilities. This has been a great opportunity to be involved in an interesting, long-term project which will play an important role in a newly regenerated Blackpool Town Centre.

Colin Harrison, our Transport Infrastructure Associate Director, said:

Our delivery team is proud to be working with our client, Blackpool Council, to successfully deliver these transformational Active Travel and NMU enhancements to improve the town centre, promote sustainability and encourage economic growth.  The designs will modernise the area, reduce travel times and improve accessibility and safety for all users and visitors to the area.
