Gallows Corner Flyover Highly Commended at the Ground Engineering Awards

We’re delighted to share that the Gallows Corner Flyover Refurbishment project has been highly commended at the Ground Engineering Awards 2026 in the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of up to £500K’ category.

The project focuses on reconstructing and modernising the Gallows Corner Flyover, a 13-span elevated structure initially built in the 1970s as a temporary military-designed building.

Working in collaboration with contractor Costain and client Transport for London, Pell Frischmann developed an innovative and sustainable bespoke solution by utilising the existing piled foundations and using Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles for modular construction for both superstructure and substructure system built off-site. This scheme is an exemplary model of innovative thinking, modern methods of construction and reusing existing foundation elements cost-effectively and sustainably.

The judges commended the project with the following statement:

“A comprehensive investigation and re-use assessment of a former MOD-constructed temporary flyover in London enabled its successful incorporation into a permanent bridge replacement scheme, ensuring operation following a constrained 12-week possession plan.

The project required a departure from conventional standards to unlock the re-use potential of the existing structure, while still achieving acceptable levels of safety and serviceability. Through rigorous assessment and engineering judgement, the team demonstrated that the structure could perform reliably within defined parameters, avoiding unnecessary replacement.

This approach highlighted the value of intelligent re-use in complex infrastructure projects.”

Well done to everyone involved!
