Connecting East Riding Coastal Communities with Crucial Road Links
road links to East Riding’s coastal communities. Over the next 100 years, it is predicted that significant parts of the East Riding coast will be eroded, putting homes, businesses, and infrastructure at risk.
The Changing Coasts East Riding (CCER) project is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes, managed by the Environment Agency and delivered by ERYC. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.
As a result, we have been appointed to conduct a high-level options appraisal for Holmpton Road, a crucial route connecting the communities of Holmpton, Hollym, and Easington, as well as the key town of Withernsea. If erosion continues to occur at its current rate, then parts of the road may need to be closed in the coming years, which would require traffic to be redirected onto alternative routes. Our work will see us explore options to upgrade existing roads to handle the diverted traffic or, alternatively, consider constructing new routes.
Additionally, we will produce a detailed review of local and national planning documents to assess any planning conditions and national guidance around COMAH sites relating to access requirements for the gas terminal sites at Easington. This review will clarify planning history and guide future decisions regarding public safety, community resilience, and infrastructure.

We are therefore very pleased to be working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) and the local Parish Councils to help identify feasible options that will ensure suitable access to Withernsea is maintained going forward.”
