Concrete Testing and Crack Repair Specification for Borrowdale Bridge
Pell Frischmann is pleased to announce that we’ve been appointed by Westmorland & Furness Council, following the March 2023 Post Tensioned Special Inspection (PTSI) Report in accordance with CS465.
The objective of the scheme is to create a concrete testing and crack repair specification for Borrowdale Bridge to help the council assess the quality of the concrete and protect the bridge deck’s post-tensioning system, ensuring the safety of its users.
We are currently working on a specification to take concrete core samples of the deck. This will involve conducting a petrographic examination, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The goal is to determine whether there are any potentially alkali-reactive aggregates present or if there is any other form of concrete deterioration.
The final specification will detail the locations and depths of all concrete cores, taking into consideration the post-tensioning system. It will also include a schedule of petrographic examinations, SEM and XRD, along with relevant drawings.
Additionally, we will provide a specification for the sealing of longitudinal cracks that coincide with the post-tensioning ducts within the outer deck elevations, box webs and soffit. This will include the application of approved cementitious sealant and a hydrophobic coating to prevent moisture and contaminants from entering, and as a result, avoid deterioration of the post-tensioning system. A Designers Risk Assessment and Pre-Construction Information will also be created as part of this commission.
Andrew Jones, our Civil Structures Associate Director, said:
We are delighted to have the opportunity to continue working with Westmorland & Furness Council
and our approved concrete testing specialists, ensuring that this important asset is appropriately maintained.
Our specification will give due consideration to minimising the disruption to the travelling public and, where possible,
works will be specified without the need for a full road closure.
Pell Frischmann looks forward to supporting Westmorland & Furness Council in improving its highway infrastructure and ensuring its long-term quality and durability.
