Centre Point: A Landmark of Vision and Renewal
Centre Point remains one of London’s most recognisable architectural icons. Rising above the heart of the city, it symbolises ambition and modernity, a testament to the transformative spirit that defined its era. As we celebrate our centenary, this landmark reminds us of the enduring impact of bold design and collaborative engineering, values that have shaped Pell Frischmann’s journey for over a century.
Centre Point’s story began in the early 1960s, a time when London was undergoing rapid urban renewal. Conceived by property developer Harry Hyams and designed by Richard Seifert, the tower was intended to redefine the city’s skyline. Construction commenced in 1963 completing in 1966 and marked a turning point in British high-rise architecture. Pell Frischmann played a pivotal role in translating Seifert’s vision into reality, providing structural engineering expertise that ensured the tower’s stability and longevity.

Centre Point’s engineering design was revolutionary for its time and was the starting point for a uniquely evolving structural typology developed over a decade of collaboration between Pell Frischmann and Richard Seifert Architects. Standing at 117 metres, it was among the tallest buildings in London upon completion setting a benchmark for high-rise construction in the UK at the time. This synergy, an aspiration to combine aesthetic ambition with pioneering engineering design approaches and emerging construction technologies exemplified the revolutionary spirit that drove this landmark project.

The site was surrounded by a busy road network which limited site access for building component delivery and construction. This potential constraint was turned into an opportunity by the engineering team and heavily influenced the evolution of the building’s structural design. A decision was taken to manufacture a significant proportion of the primary structural components offsite, easing transportation and delivery challenges, enabling the construction to progress rapidly. Pell Frischmann’s developed an innovative precast concrete modular system which formed the architectural load bearing exoskeleton and a bespoke prestressed precast concrete floor panel system stitched together on site.

The success of Centre Point was the result of exceptional partnerships. Richard Seifert’s architectural brilliance was complemented by Pell Frischmann’s engineering ingenuity, while contractors and material suppliers worked in harmony to deliver a building that would stand the test of time. These alliances reflected a shared commitment to excellence, a principle that continues to guide Pell Frischmann’s approach to complex projects today.

Centre Point has been both pilloried and celebrated. Initially criticised for standing empty for years after completion, it later became a symbol of urban regeneration. In 1995, it was granted Grade II listed status, securing its place amongst Britain’s architectural heritage.
Its transformation over recent years into luxury apartments, as well as supporting the reinvention of the ground scape, previously dominated by the car, but now enlivened with extensive new public space, demonstrated the adaptability of its original design and the foresight of Pell Frischmann’s original engineering solutions. As the original engineers, with a unique insight into the existing structure’s anatomy, design and construction methodologies, we were instrumental in working with the development team, evolving high-value redevelopment proposals meeting the needs of the contemporary residential market.

Centre Point is more than a building; it is a symbol of resilience and reinvention. As we mark our centenary, its story resonates with our own values of innovation, adaptability, and collaboration. The engineering principles that shaped Centre Point continue to influence our work on projects that define cities and communities. Looking ahead, Pell Frischmann remains committed to creating environments that inspire and endure, just as Centre Point has done for generations.
