We’re proud to have won the National Rail Awards’ Infrastructure Achievement of the Year award. The win celebrates our work on the £33M Browney Curve Embankment Stabilisation Project, in partnership with Story Contracting Limited and Network Rail.

The National Rail Awards is Britain’s biggest and most respected rail awards ceremony, celebrating outstanding achievements across the industry by highlighting those which demonstrate innovation, engineering successes, environmental sustainability, safety improvements, and deliver measurable performance improvements.

The Browney Curve project stabilised a large and complex landslide system that had been disrupting rail traffic on the East Coast Mainline for 150 years. This highly collaborative project was technically complex, utilising state-of-the-art analytical methods to refine and optimise the design, providing an economical and permanent solution.

The project team overcame significant challenges in both the design and construction phases, implementing the scheme on an active and unstable slope while ensuring that rail traffic on the East Coast Mainline remained uninterrupted throughout the construction phase.

On winning the award, Head of Geotechnical Engineering, Andrew Gill, said:

I am so proud of the team and the collaboration with Story Contracting and Network Rail Eastern Region. We have been involved with the Browney Curve site for many years and to finally see the positive impacts of the stabilisation measures on the East Coast Mainline is a testament to the fantastic teams that made it happen.

One of the judges commended the win with the following statement:

With state-of-the-art geotechnical and water management solutions, this team conquered a challenge that had defeated the best efforts of predecessors for nearly two centuries… and all without any delay to trains!

A heartfelt congratulations to all the amazing teams and partners who contributed to achieving this milestone!
