Borough Yards Scheme Wins Best Urban Project of the Year
Pell Frischmann is delighted to see the Borough Yards scheme win Best Urban Project of the Year at the 2022 MIPIM Awards.
Designed by the award-winning practice, SPPARC Architecture, Borough Yards is a place that resonates with the blended work/play lives of modern urbanites. Located next to the historic Borough Market, the development of new retail streets, cultural galleries and commercial office space is urbane and welcoming. The scheme creates a vibrant new London destination to shop, eat, work and play.
We’re proud that our civil and structural services helped unlocked the scheme, achieving planning permission in 2016 and making 50 technical submissions to Network Rail.
The scheme is both a regeneration and extension of Borough Market that has transformed the area whilst preserving its unique character. There are acres of vaulted cathedral-like brick structures that are transformed into a vibrant retail-led destination and an adjacent new-build office. The office is sympathetic in character to the local vernacular rather than a standard speculative office. This project combines the engineering challenges of both building adjacent to historic Network Rail mainline infrastructure and alterations thereto. Our efforts, in collaboration with SPPARC, were focused on archive studies, intrusive investigations and design to justify the scheme to Network Rail and ensure the safe operation of the vital rail infrastructure.
Jonathan Childs, Pell Frischmann’s Buildings Sector Director, said:
It’s great to work with a visionary client and architect team on a project that pushed our engineering skills to the limit.
