The Office

Our Bishop's Stortford office offers a broad blend of expertise in rail, building structures, bridges, water, environment and fire engineering disciplines. With around 50 staff to deliver complex projects, we can also provide cross-sector support to the other offices in the UK, and work on overseas projects.

One example of our cross-sector work is in the area of Air-Rights building developments within the rail environment, for which we have a long and successful history in feasibility, design and delivery. These schemes have involved stakeholder management of Network Rail, Docklands Light Railway and TfL infrastructure and also private developers. We currently are also working with London Overground on upgrades at over 40 of their stations across London.

The Opportunities

Electrical Engineer

Main Purpose of the Job

Based in one of our regional design offices you will provide technical support to engineers and project managers delivering projects associated with our Rail Infrastructure business. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a primary focus on electrical engineering. This includes all stages of the design process; initial concept, approval in principal, detailed design, specification writing, technical support during construction and production of as built information. Projects include rail station and rail depot infrastructure. Design activities include: platform lighting, staff accommodation; and cable management systems.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

•Manage day-to-day requirements of individual projects including: client liaison, planning, budget and deliverables.

•Prepare detailed technical submissions including concept designs and detailed design specifications, drawings and calculations.

•Non-intrusive survey and assessment of existing electrical installations.

•Working with national standards, Codes of Practice, design methods and client specific standards such as London Underground / Network Rail / Docklands Light Railway standards.




           Practical design experience associated with Electrical Engineering


           Electrical Engineering degree  

           Relevant degree/HND (electrical engineering or building services)  




           3 years’ electrical design experience


                       2 years’ experience associated with Rail infrastructure projects.



           Communication skills

           Good standard written english

           IT literate          


           Previous rail industry experience

Associate Engineer - Rail

Main Purpose of the Job
Based in our Bishop’s Stortford office you will manage the delivery of infrastructure projects associated with our rail infrastructure business. Work includes all elements of design from inception to construction. You will manage and lead design teams in the successful delivery of projects as well as energise their professional development. In addition, you will support business development activities including marketing and the preparation of technical and financial submissions. Associate Civil Engineer


Main Purpose of the Job

Project Leadership of technical teams delivering our asset management commissions associated with our rail and highway business sectors. Current commissions include inspection and load assessment of rail and highway assets and the design of maintenance solutions. You will manage our design teams and provide technical guidance. You will check and approve load assessment reports and design calculations. You will also liaise with our clients and support business development activity. Based in our Bishops Stortford or London offices you will be Chartered Engineer with at least 10 years post qualification experience.

Graduate Civil Engineer 

Main Purpose of the Job


Reporting to Engineer / Senior Engineer the Graduate Engineer will be required to undertake hands on design for Highways projects. The successful post holder will be responsible for the delivery of technical outputs of projects or service areas for projects and work within a well-established team.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake services within an engineering environment which may include (but not limited to); scheme investigation, site inspections, data collection and analysis, feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed design, preparation of tender documents and works/construction inspection and supervision.
  • Prepare technical designs in accordance with approved design procedures and standards.
  • Prepare technical documents and drawings for checking and approval
  • Exercise engineering judgement and provide innovative solutions to engineering problems.
  • Prepare designs, design calculations, tender documentation, scheme evaluations, design statements and other reports as identified in the Project Quality Plan on assigned projects
  • Carry out other duties identified in the Project Quality Plan on assigned projects
  • Undertake work using relevant standards, Codes of Practice, Health & Safety Legislation and current design methods
  • Comply with company business management system and the procedures IMS & BMS procedures


  • Graduate - MEng (Hons)/ BEng (Hons) / BSc Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Assistant – HND Civil Engineering (or equivalent) and or as above
  • Working towards professional membership (IEng / CEng MICE / MIHT); demonstrable with “live” CPD / DAP and current membership / training scheme commitments.


  • Graduate - Ideally min 1 years’ experience, but not essential
